2-day En Plein Air using ink & pastel
Overview
It is a great pleasure to host Sam in Sydney for a second two day en plein air workshop. Sam teaches at Newlyn School of Art in Cornwall, UK as well as privately. Her ability to create in a refreshing and unique style is captivating an international following.
The foundation of Sam’s art began with a love of drawing, including children’s book illustration and teaching. Rendering en plein air drawings into paintings is inspiring and motivating to all who follow her.
Sam will demonstrate, with clear instruction, both individually and to the group as a whole, ways for achieving movement and energy in your artwork.
Sam works primarily in inks and pastel to create semi-abstract landscape paintings inspired by her travels around the British Isles.
Venue
By the Sydney harbour foreshore, close to public transport and street parking.

In this two day workshop we will explore foliage and colour.
Firstly looking at shapes and texture. Learn how to create studies that merge areas of realistic focus with more abstracted, spontaneous areas.
Limited to 10 participants.
DAY 1 / Monday 18 Jan / 10am - 4pm
We begin by sketching and looking at shapes; paying close attention to unusual compositions. Moving to a very minimal colour palette to focus on a more painterly approach and looking at wet versus dry mark making.
DAY 2 / Tuesday 19 Jan / 10am - 4pm
We move into full colour; playing with diffusing layers against more bolder graphic layers. We’ll study muted, soft colours, against intense and saturated colours.
Our aim is to create a series of vibrant and exciting botanical studies with a semi abstract style. The workshop will conclude after an exploration of cropping and editing.
En plein air experience is advised but not essential.

Brushes, big and small. A variety of styles, natural bristles preferred. Can be old decorators brushes from the garage, or watercolour brushes. Any foam rollers or scrapers you might have. Interesting mark making tools.
Sketch book (or a variety of sizes and shapes for experimenting) for drawing in.
Paper for wet artwork (ink, watercolour etc) min. 200gsm. As small or large as you prefer.
Scissors
Tissues, kitchen roll. Anything to soak up water and ink.
Large water bottle with lid to use outside on location.
Pencils for drawing. Preferably 6B 7B 8B. Sharpener/blade.
Masking tape (frog tape from Bunnings is recommended)
A variety of tubs for inks and water - no less than 8 (approx. jam jar size; yogurt tubs, take-away tubs etc)
Whatever inks you have. Sam recommends cad-yellow, a blue, a magenta, burnt sienna, black, white.
A variety of soft pastels.
Any materials you would like to experiment with.
Appropriate clothing, hat, sunglasses, camera, suncream, apron, something to sit on (no guarantee for a public seat exactly where you want to sit).

About Sam Boughton
Sam is a British Contemporary Landscape painter that lives in Devon, UK.
She works primarily in inks and pastel to create semi-abstract landscapes paintings inspired by her travels around the British Isles. Regularly traveling to North West Scotland, Cornwall and North Wales her semi-abstract collections are sensory responses to each of these stunning landscapes.
