OVERVIEW
I am delighted to host a pastel weekend workshop in Sydney with Melbourne based artist Judy Drew, one of Australia’s finest pastel artists.
After studying graphic art in Melbourne, Judy Drew moved to Bougainville Island for nine years. Her oil paintings, pastels and watercolours of the local people established her reputation as a fine artist.
Upon returning to Australia and for the past thirty years she has produced both figurative and still life works. The influence of Japanese art on the post impressionists has lead to a gradual change in her style; using simplified colour and shape to create a more contemporary edge.
Drew’s work glows with an intensity of colour rarely seen in pastels. Represented by Melbourne Fine Art Gallery her work is in high demand by investors, galleries and private collections worldwide.
Dates: Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th September 2015
CLASS INFORMATION
SATURDAY WORKSHOP AND DEMONSTRATION – 26th September
Working in charcoal, with a life model, trying to develop a freer, more unrestrained technique Drew will discuss developing a strong sense of observation, awareness of form and shape through light and shade and subtleties of colour when working with pastel. Capturing a likeness is only part of the success of a good portrait. Bold, spontaneous and vigorous line work can add real emotion to the work.
PORTRAIT WITH LIFE MODEL
10.00 – 12.30 Charcoal portrait
1.30 – 4.00 Pastel portrait
SUNDAY WORKSHOP AND DEMONSTRATION – 27th September
Drew will discuss composition, colour choices and arrangement of objects – referring to examples of traditional and contemporary approaches towards Still Life. She will give a short demonstration and then students will begin their study. Working in colour (on a black background if you feel comfortable – otherwise a background colour of your choice).
