Hill End

We depart Central Station by private coach (9.00am, Friday 9th). Morning tea at Falls Gallery, Wentworth Falls and drawing en plein air around their garden. The plan is to visit Bathurst Regional Gallery and see their collection of paintings and drawings by well known Hill End Artists. However, these are not on permanent display. If it is not possible to view them we’ll drive straight to Sofala for a late lunch and explore this historic village before arriving around dusk at Hill End Lodge. Like many artists before us Saturday will be creating art and discovering the history of Hill End.
After breakfast on Sunday we’ll return to Sydney via Capertee and Bell’s Line of Road, visiting Mt. Tomah Botanic Garden for lunch and arriving late afternoon.

There are views from the Old Hospital and Hill End Pub if the weather is inclement
Saturday is suitable for a beginner, intermediate or advanced artist
Non artists/partners welcome
Hill End Lodge has single and double rooms with ensuite
Our group requires a minimum of 15 participants

HILL END sits above the Turon River Valley and is surrounded by scenic bush country. Wealth from the gold rush saw the village boom in 1872. By the 1950′s, long after the end of the gold rush and later the depression; the town had become a popular destination for many of Australia’s greatest artists including Lloyd Rees, Donald Friend, Russell Drysdale, Margaret Olley, John Olsen and Brett Whitely. It continues as an artist haven.

I had a wonderful relaxing artful, fun time with you all in Hill End, and lots of lovely memories stored away. Thankyou so much for all your hardwork organising it – I’m looking forward to the next trip I can do with you….. Ruth Maltby 2012

I have just taken part in Cilla’s drawing in the landscape group. For 2 terms we gathered in various locations around Sydney, a group of different, interesting people. As well as learning from Cilla’s encouraging input we got to know and inspire each other. I feel I now have the confidence to take out pencil and paper and draw just about anywhere.

I also went on a group ‘artist’s retreat’ with Cilla to Hill End and had the best time. The long weekend was very well organised with informative visits to art galleries on the way, inspiring landscapes and tuition. Again the group “on tour” were great to be with.
