Please join me for a 4WD adventure to some of the most stunning areas of the Flinders Ranges. Experience the thrill of the ancient Ridgetop at Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary, unwind in luxury at the Prairie Hotel, Parachilna and discover ancient indigenous rock engravings hidden deep within Chambers Gorge.

Enjoy walking into the spectacular Wilpena Pound, 4WD through Brachina and Bunyeroo Gorges in the Flinders Ranges National Park and unwind with memorable views at Rawnsley Park Station.

This tour is designed to take you into remote locations to experience the beauty and vastness of the Outback. At the same time you will stay in superior accommodation.

This is a private tour; we will choose when and where to create art and record our memories. A small and medium drawing book are recommended and a camera for en plein air work. Artists may be at different levels of experience and are encouraged to work at their own level with group appraisals and individual attention when requested. Oil paints/chalk pastels are not recommended.

WHAT TO BRING – art equipment

  • 2b pencil
  • rubber
  • drawing book (not too small)
  • any art materials you prefer (eg pen/wash, watercolour, graphite, charcoal)
  • optional: portable stool


It is early autumn – some cool layers are advisable.

  • sensible non slip walking shoes, preferably with ankle support
  • hat, sunglasses, suncream
  • toiletries
  • casual clothing
  • warm jacket



A reasonable level of fitness is necessary and that you can walk independently at a moderate pace.

Day One /  5 April    Broken Hill to Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary (484kms)

Depart Broken Hill at 8.30am along the Barrier Highway to Yunta;  then we leave the bitumen and head into the South Australian outback.

Picnic lunch at abandoned Waukeringa hotel and wonder about surviving in this remote outpost.
Be amazed and delighted by changing landscape as we head into the Flinders Ranges.

Arrive Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary late afternoon, our accommodation for 2 nights.

Lunch and dinner included.


Day Two  /  6 April    Arkaroola Ridgetop Tour

Today is an experience you will never forget for all the right reasons.  We travel by open-top 4WD vehicle to the top of Sillers Lookout with endless panoramic views of timeless terrain. Our guide will share knowledge of Arkaroola’s 1600 million year geological history in some of the most spectacularly rugged country. Wonder at the beauty of crystal Mount Gee. We’ll take time to relax – optional drawing – or you may prefer to walk in search of the resident yellow footed rock wallabies.

After dinner a star tour in Arkaroola’s own observatory.

Day Three  /  7 April 2016    Arkaroola to Parachilna

Depart after breakfast for the Gammon Ranges (one of the many mountain groups of the Flinders Ranges). At Chambers Gorge (a magnificent deep canyon) we’ll walk along the dry creek bed with ancient Aboriginal rock engravings of the Adnyamathanha people. Travelling through massive outback sheep stations today we’ll experience the enormity of the ‘Outback’. We’ll stop at Blinman (the highest town in the Flinders Ranges), then a spectacular drive through Parachilna Gorge to iconic Prairie Hotel.

Enjoy luxury tonight in unique rammed earth rooms and a great outback dinner with a slightly ‘feral’ twist – a signature of the Prairie Hotel.

Day Four  /  8 April    Parachilna to Rawnsley Park Station


Today, we visit both Brachina and Bunyeroo Gorges – highlights of the Flinders Ranges National Park. From Wilpena Pound Visitor Centre we’ll walk into the Pound full of birds, wildlife and abundant scenery.

Our destination is Rawnsley Park Station with comfortable cabin accommodation and dinner in the Woolshed Restaurant. Opportunities for walks and creating art with spectacular views of Rawnsley Bluff on the southern face of Wilpena Pound.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Day 5  /  9 April    Rawnsley Park/Flinders Ranges NP

Free choice today. You may prefer to relax at Rawnsley Park or create visual memories of the spectacular scenery with your chosen art medium. Alternatively organise with our guide to revisit stunning locations from yesterday or explore other spectacular tracks.

Optional early morning flight and aerial view of Wilpena Pound and surrounding ranges. ($185.00pp for 30 mins). This flight needs to be reserved at time of tour booking.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.


Day Six  /  10 April    Rawnsley Park to Broken Hill (426kms)

After breakfast and leisurely start to the day, morning tea is in the small township of Hawker, and visit to local artist Jeff Morgan. A highlight is his 360 degree panorama painting of Wilpena Pound from St. Mary’s Peak, the highest point of the Pound. We then head south into wheat country with constantly changing landscape. Picnic lunch and visit to the quaint township of Orooroo, our last stop before returning to Broken Hill.
