Shark Island & Taronga Zoo

OVERVIEW

Please join me for 2 unique en plein air days.

We’ll explore Fort Denison and Shark Island on Wednesday 18th April
and Taronga Zoo on Friday 20th April.

ABOUT SHARK ISLAND

Shark Island, with picnic shelters, a gazebo, large grassed area and a wading beach is at the mouth of Rose Bay on Sydney Harbour. Until 1975 it was used as an animal quarantine area, public recreation reserve and naval storage depot. The island presents a danger for shipping due to the shallow waters surrounding it.

ABOUT FORT DENISON

The 360° views are sure to impress. A former defence facility located on a small harbour island in the centre of Sydney Harbour, just a stone’s throw from the Botanic Gardens. Take the guided tour to explore Fort Denison’s museum, canons gun powder store and winding staircase in Australia’s only Martello Tower*. Discover the fully operational tide guage room where Sydneys tidal benchmark is recorded. Make sure you’re there for the firing of the 1pm cannon.

*Martello towers are small defensive forts, built across the British Empire during the 19th century, from the time of the French Revolutionary Wars onwards. Most were coastal forts.
