Pastels: Materials & Processes

Both a drawing and painting medium, pastels are the ultimate tool for the creative artist. For anyone interested in learning to use a myriad of pastel materials and surfaces, as well as techniques, for creating an artwork. We begin with a group discussion and demonstration using a broad variety of materials on offer – chalk pastels, powdered pastels, crayons, contés, pastel pencils, effects created with torchons, rubbers, cotton buds et al on pastel paper, pastel board, textured and primed surfaces as well as velour paper.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • How to choose what suits you best when visiting an art store
  • Learn to combine different pastel mediums
  • How to create both texture and colour effects
  • A series of tonal, colour and mark making exercises


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Explore a broad variety of pastel mediums and surfaces.
  • Learn how to combine different pastel materials.
  • Learn how to create both texture and colour effects.
  • Create a tonal pastel still life artwork.
  • Copy the work of a pastel master.
  • Make colour ‘sing’ using contrasting colours.
  • Create or copy a still life project.
