Norfolk Island 2017

OVERVIEW

Please join me for a week drawing, painting and exploring Norfolk Island; 1,412 km east of Australia’s Evans Head. This island charms visitors with its laidback lifestyle, unspoilt scenery and spine-tingling history. 1,800 inhabitants live on an area of approx. 14 sq miles.

Norfolk’s history is riveting. Colonised by east Polynesians and settled by Great Britain in 1788. It served as a convict penal settlement from 1788 until 1855, with an 11 year hiatus when it lay abandoned (1814-1825). Permanent civilian residence began in 1856 with settlers arriving from Pitcairn Is. In 1913 the UK handed Norfolk to Australia to administer as an external territory.

The evergreen Norfolk Is. Pine, a symbol of the island and a key export is a popular ornamental tree, especially on mainland Australia.
